| Personalize Retirement Strategy for Best Results
To generate lifetime income in retirement, my goal is to tap our savings and investments as needed without having to rely on insurance company guarantees. If it turns out my wife, Georgina, and I need those guarantees, or if insurance products such as lifetime income annuities become more attractive, we stand ready to change our plan. But, for now, we favor what financial planners call a "systematic withdrawal" strategy, one we intend to personalize rather than rely on rules of thumb. Last week, I explained that we use a variety of income sources during our semiretirement. Our fixed-income investments, with the principal to be liquidated at maturity, will cover our anticipated expenses for about 10 years, while another chunk of our portfolio, mostly in stock mutual funds, is left untouched.
Major Averages Hover Above Unchanged Line
(RTTNews) - The major averages continued to hover above the unchanged line in the middle of Monday's trading. The stocks kept off their high for the day, but remained above negative territory. The lackluster performance came as investors reacted to the new speculation that the Fed would not cut interest rates this year. This notion was spawned by the release of higher-than-expected jobs data on Friday, which showed the economy may not be slowing as much as originally thought. By 12 pm ET, the Dow and the S&P 500 were both up roughly 1%. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq was up about 0.5%. On of Monday's biggest gainers was Memory Pharmaceuticals (MEMY | charts | news | PowerRating). The company saw its stock rise on Monday following an announcement from Thursday that it had finalized its enrollment in Phase 2 testing of an Alzheimer's drug.

Let everyone use what Wall Street knows
DOYLESTOWN, Pennsylvania: A quarter-century after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's chairman, John Shad, declared that he was going to come down on insider trading with hobnailed boots, the practice continues to flourish. Earlier this month, we heard that a band of Wall Streeters pocketed $14 million in allegedly illegal profits based on inside information, and that unnamed traders may have made more than $5 million knowing ahead of time about a buyout offer for Texas Utilities. The SEC should stop pretending it can maintain fairness in the markets. There are other ways to punish criminal behavior on Wall Street. People invest in the market precisely because they think they know things others don't. It could be as innocent as the belief that Apple will sell more iPods next year, or as questionable as a tip that a private equity group is going to make an offer for a utility.
Trinity Real Estate Solutions Offers TLS Encryption to Secure Draw ...
DALLAS, April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Trinity Real Estate Solutions(R), a national construction lender services management company, announces the addition of Transcription Layered Security (TLS) to its offering of security tools. The TLS feature allows for the effective and secure communication of draw inspection results and subsequent email notes through client e-mail exchanges. "E-mail security is of top concern when it comes to securing the privacy of draw inspection results through e-mail communications to and from lenders," said Brad Meyer, president of Trinity Real Estate Solutions. "It's essential these communications be encrypted in the same manner as our highly secure Web site access." TLS is similar in its encryption methodology to Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), a protocol for transmitting private documents over the Internet and commonly used by the lending/banking industry for Web site encryption transmission.
Trico Marine Services Adopts Stockholder Rights Plan
HOUSTON, TX -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 04/09/07 -- The Board of Directors of Trico Marine Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: TRMA) today adopted a three year stockholder rights plan designed to ensure that all Trico stockholders realize the fair value of their investment. The plan is designed to guard against any abusive actions that may be attempted in order to gain control of Trico without compensating all stockholders for that control. The rights plan will not prevent a takeover of the Company but should encourage anyone seeking to acquire the Company to negotiate with the Board of Directors prior to attempting a takeover. Trico will request that its stockholders ratify the rights plan at its 2008 Annual Meeting. Subject to an affirmative stockholder vote at that meeting, the rights plan will expire in 2010.
Why Are You Looking for the Living Among the Dead?
Y'all know I always write about Easter because a) Easter is my favorite holiday b) the topic of the ressurection of the body just seems so appropriate to a blog about CR. My mother and I attended the beautiful 9 am Easter service at Riverside Church, one of the great American Protestant cathedrals, in Morningside Heights of New York. It was just amazing... the music, the flowers, the sanctuary itself. The preaching was kinda so-so, but I've heard so much great preaching in my life that I'm way too harsh a judge. My dad and I used to play church critic every Sunday in the car on the way to lunch after service... drove my step-mom crazy. Anyhow, the service was re-vitalizing, and I found myself meditating again upon the life-affirming message of Easter. As I've written before, my theology is way more complex than a simple, "Adam and Eve sinned so Christ died and now everything is okay," type of Christianity.
Holding Pattern Persists
[BRIEFING.COM] Stocks continue to trade sideways around the unchanged mark as investors anxiously wait to get a better look at the earnings picture. It's no secret that slower economic growth and tougher comparisons after several strong years of earnings are likely to snap 14 straight quarters of double-digit profit growth for the S&P 500. However, the possibility that guidance may be extremely cautious is also stalling momentum ahead of Alcoa's (AA 35.08 +0.21) report tonight. It is worth noting that if it weren't for a 1.6% advance in fellow Dow component Citigroup (C 52.41 +0.83), which currently accounts for more than six Dow points, the price-weighted index would still be in negative territory and in jeopardy of seeing a seven-day winning streak come to an end. Citigroup is trading higher amid reports of a possible major restructuring announcement.
