| Hartford Financial Services at AIFA 32nd Annual Conference - Final
NIGEL: This first panel discussion that we're having this morning is on the annuity amount. The first company that we have presenting on this panel is the Hartford. Hartford is one bank that is recognized as one of the latest in this area, and with that in mind, we are fortunate to have with us John Walters and Sean O'Hara. And with that, let me turn it over to them, and we'll turn it over to questions after their remarks. JOHN WALTERS, PRESIDENT, US WEALTH MANAGEMENT GROUP, THE HARTFORD: Thank you, Nigel, and good morning everybody. I appreciate your taking the time this morning to hear part of the Hartford story. What we're going to try to do this morning is talk more about the business of distribution at the Hartford and how we approach that and how we take that globally. We're going to make sure that you take a look at our Safe Harbor statement, which should be in your books, and Kim, that's all I have to say on that, correct? So then we'll get on into the presentation.
No matter your size, a 401(k) for you
Q: My employees have expressed an interest in a 401(k) retirement plan, but there are only six of us in the company. Is a 401(k) a good idea for such a small business? Can I even set one up in a company like mine? A: There are 401(k) retirement plans geared specifically to small companies like yours, and offering one can help you attract and retain good employees just like the bigger companies do. For small businesses, 401(k)s come in three varieties: simple, safe harbor or traditional. All three allow your employees to put pretax dollars into investment accounts, lowering their taxable income and helping them save money for retirement. When you match their investments, you are entitled to a tax deduction for the money you contribute to their accounts.
Osmeña: Cebu’s realty market
The increasing population, migration of population and changes in family formation had created a demand in real estate transactions involving the transfer of space or ownership in residential realty. The real estate market is also sensitive to changes in wage levels, employment opportunities and stability of income. Rental payments and housing costs are closely geared to ability to pay. Cebu has a higher degree of entrepreneurs among its populace thus, creating more personal savings that allows them to avail themselves of mortgage funds with stable interest rates. This allows homes to be bought on credit. The terms, therefore, are an important part of a purchase transaction and often influence the transaction price. Rental activity, particularly in Metro Cebu and other urban areas, still forms an important part of the total real estate market.
Investors line up for India's real estate
NEW DELHI - India's real-estate boom keeps getting bigger. In the past few weeks, private investments in the sector amounting to US$50 billion have been announced. This week, the country's biggest real-estate developer, DLF, inked a $20 billion deal with the largest privately held real-estate developer in the world, Al Nakheel of the United Arab Emirates, to build two townships in northern and western India. "We have signed a 50:50 joint venture with Al Nakheel to develop integrated townships with an investment of $20 billion," a DLF executive said on the sidelines of a conference of UAE and Indian officials, business and political leaders in New Delhi. The companies will initially invest $5 billion each in the next three years to develop about 16,000 hectares, most probably in the states of Haryana (Gurgaon) and Maharashtra (between Pune and Mumbai).
ABN deal would make Barclays a big Asian player
HONG KONG (Reuters) - Barclays stands to increase its Asian operations four-fold if it buys ABN AMRO, picking up a big footprint in regional credit cards and the fast-growing Indian and Pakistan markets in the process. Barclays, which has roughly 3,000 staff in Asia, is in talks for an $80 billion takeover of Dutch rival ABN, which had nearly 14,000 staff in the region at the end of last year. Much of ABN's staff is in its large consumer and commercial banking operations, particularly in increasingly important markets like China and India, where ABN will open its 28th branch this year. The bank also had 2.8 million credit cards in Asia at the end of 2006, up 19 percent from the year before. "The credit card business of ABN will be of interest to Barclays," said Jean-Pierre Lambert, an analyst at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods.
FXCM: Dollar Driven Lower As China Trade Row Heats Up
Even when the FX market is low on scheduled event risk, the responsibility for price action can easily be picked up by unplanned incidents like verbal geopolitical sparring. Shortly after the US announced yesterday that it was filing a complaint with the WTO against China, members of the Chinese government returned the symbolic blow with harsh language that sent the dollar plummeting. Marking one of the most impressive anti-dollar rallies, EURUSD marked a new two-year high after a 105-point move pulled the pair to 1.3455. Against the Swiss franc, the greenback’s drop measured nearly 130 points when the pair stalled just below 1.2150. Reversing its own dollar advances, GBPUSD extended its modest rebound yesterday with an eventual 165 point move 1.9750. Finally, USDJPY contained its downside action to a 70-point swing down to 118.75 after the BoJ’s pass on interest rates evened sentiment out. Though there were a few third-tier indicators on the US event calendar, the market was fully preoccupied before the data even hit the wires.

Corn Bear Market Spurs Double-Your-Money Bet for Goldman, Funds
Goldman Sachs Group Inc. predicts a rebound that will turn $10 million into $18.15 million by the time Iowa farmers harvest their crop in October. Krom River Partners LLP and the Mother Earth Investment AG fund are so certain a recovery is imminent they're buying corn during the current rout. ``You're going to need as much corn in the ground as possible to fill demand for ethanol,'' said Krom River's Christopher Brodie in London, who has traded commodities for 20 years. He bought corn for his hedge fund on April 2, the second straight day the Chicago Board of Trade imposed trading limits to prevent prices from collapsing. Brokers and traders at the Board of Trade are betting $60 billion in futures and options on whether farmers can reap the record harvest needed for ethanol, corn syrup, livestock feed and breakfast cereal.
